Welcome to You All!

No matter how far you roam, you can't take the Michigan out of a Michigander. This photo contest serves as an ode to everything Michigan and showcases our state's diverse culture. Each week, we showcase the best of the best and vote to nominate our winner, who earns bragging rights and some cash. Even though the top 3 nominees of the week are eligible to win, our chatroom is for anyone who wants to learn more about photography techniques, get suggestions on who should be next up, or even just to say hi. While we are all about Michiganders, we also embrace anyone who emigrates here and adopt them. Our Honorary Michiganders can look forward to a case of Vernors, a gift card to their nearest Coney Island, and a welcome party on Belle Isle. Happy hunting for your photos for the contest.

Daphney Walker

Born and raised on Detroit’s east side, Daphney is a hands-on DIY mama who loves crafting with everyday materials, making homemade kitchen staples, and exploring new ideas. She created this photo contest in honor of her grandfather, the family’s OG cameraman, whose journey from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Detroit, and love story with her grandmother, shaped the roots of their family and her own creative spirit.

The History of Michigan

Michigan was established as a US state on January 26, 1837. It has deep roots from its french founders and is known for the Great Lakes, the Big Three automakers and its diverse food and culture. While it has seen better days as the population has gone down, it still is home to a unique blend of traditons and folks. Even though times are changing, Michigan has a habit of adapting to the times no matter how hard things get. From the auto plants and factory lines to small lake towns and UP backroads, people here know how to hustle, rebuild and keep it moving. Detroit might be the loudest example, but across the state you see the same mix of pride, creativity and grind showing up in local businesses, music, and everyday life.
